The Kaaba (Makkah) and Masjid al-Haram

The first place to visit on your sacred Umrah journey is the Kaaba (Makkah) and Masjid al-Haram. The core of the Islamic world, and the focus of your Umrah. The Grand Mosque has several historic sites other than the Kaaba. The stone with the footprint of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) as mentioned in the Quran (2:125).

Hijr Ismail: A half circle shaped wall of the Kaaba, which was once there, and has a lot of spiritual significance for prayer.

The Well of Zamzam: A spring that has quenched the thirst of pilgrims and was unveiled with baby Ismail’s (AS) footsteps.

Pilgrim Tip: Make dua in Hijr Ismail, it is one of the most accepted places for duas, so visit during the early morning or late night to spend quality time there.

The Mosque of the Prophet (PBUH) in Madinah

This is the second holiest place in Islam, built by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself when he migrated to Madinah.

The Rawdah ash-Sharifah: The space between the Prophet’s (PBUH) minbar and his house which is mentioned in the Hadith as “a garden from the gardens of Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

The Prophet’s Tomb: This is the place where pilgrims offer Salam to the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions, Abu Bakr (RA) and Umar (RA), which is inside the mosque.

Make sure to book your Rawdah permit through the official Nusuk app in advance to ensure access is strictly controlled in order to manage the crowd.

The Cave of Hira

This mountain is the place where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to meditate in the spiritual cave of Hira. This is the spot where the first verses of the Quran (Surah Al-Alaq) were revealed to him by Jibreel (AS) when he first became a prophet. In recent years, the Saudi government has limited climbing at the site to preserve the site and ensure the safety of pilgrims. If you are travelling for the first time then we recommend you booking through a group Umrah package that helps you explore the sacred journey with more comfort.

Jabal Thawr and the Cave of Thawr (Makkah)

This is the cave where the Prophet (PBUH) and Abu Bakr (RA) went for shelter during the Hijrah (migration) to Madinah from Makkah, while being chased by the Quraysh. It is mentioned in the Quran: “When he was in the cave, he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us’ (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:40). It is a steep and rugged walk to the cave. If you can and are allowed by local guides, go early in the morning and avoid the heat of the day. If not, then it is equally spiritually rewarding to see the mountain from a distance and say the appropriate verses of the Quran.

Masjid Quba (Madinah)

It was the first mosque to be constructed in Islamic history by the Prophet (PBUH) when he arrived in Madinah. The Prophet (PBUH) placed the first brick of this mosque with his own hands. Masjid-e-Quba holds great spiritual significance. Ibn Majah recorded that two Rak’ahs of voluntary prayer in Masjid Quba is equivalent to one Umrah. The Prophet (PBUH) used to visit it regularly on Saturday, and it is highly recommended to visit it on this day.

Masjid al-Qiblatain

This mosque is an important site in Islamic history. Here the Prophet (PBUH) received the revelation to change the direction of prayer (Qibla) from Jerusalem (Al-Aqsa) to the Kaaba in Makkah during a prayer. It is recorded that the mosque was originally constructed with two prayer tombs (mihrabs) in memory of this. It is in Al-Sunbulah district and can be easily accessed by taxi.

Mount Uhud and the Martyrs’ Cemetery (Madinah)

It is the place of Uhud, one of the most significant battles in the early years of the Muslim community, which tested the faith of the early Muslims and their resolve occurred here. There are 70 Sahaba (companions) buried in the cemetery at the foot of Mount, including the Prophet’s beloved uncle, Sayyiduna Hamza (RA), the “Lion of Allah.
